What Should You Expect From Your Bankruptcy Lawyer?

gentleman extending hand for a handshakeIf you are considering filing a personal bankruptcy case, selecting the "right" attorney to represent you is one of the most important decisions you can make. What should you expect from your bankruptcy attorney at your initial consultation?

You should expect to meet with the attorney who will be representing you, not just a paralegal or other member of the law firm's staff. The initial consultation is your opportunity to determine if you feel comfortable with the lawyer, not just his/her staff. You should expect your bankruptcy lawyer to request detailed information about your finances. It is important for you to answer all of the attorney’s questions as completely and as honestly as possible.

You should expect your attorney to review everything about your financial situation to fully understand your debts, assets, creditors and other factors that impact your case.

You should expect your lawyer to provide you with an agreement for representation. This is the contract that will establish the attorney-client relationship. It should set forth the legal services to be provided and the amount you will be required to pay for those services. It should also list services that are not covered.

You should expect your lawyer to answer your questions and make you feel comfortable with your decision to retain him or her. You should be provided information that instills confidence in the attorney's ability to effectively handle your case.

Please keep in mind that every bankruptcy matter is different.
